THE death of Juan Antonio Samaranch, the seventh president of the International Olympic Committee, aged 89, yesterday brought to a close the most revolutionary period in the history of the Olympic movement.
Elected in 1980, Spaniard Samaranch, seized a near-bankrupt organisation and, within the first 10 years of a reign that lasted 21, transformed both the IOC and the Games beyond recognition. Not everyone approved.
Yet he transformed an old-fashioned, amateur gentlemans club to a condition of frontline professionalism, both within the executive and in the medal-winning arena.
Those 10 years were the first of two revolutions; primarily, the formal acceptance in 1987, against a background of 70 years resistance, of a world that embraced top sponsors.

An internet clip of the rant by Anton McEneny, 23, has been viewed more than 150,000 times and spawned two music remixes.
The Glasgow factory worker hit the bar after his flight to the Czech Republic was axed due to the volcanic ash from Iceland. He then yelled the abuse during a Sky TV report from Edinburgh Airport.
After being told he’s now famous, Anton, left, said: “Hopefully I’ll get recognised and get a bird.
“But I STILL hate Iceland. If it wasn’t for them I’d be sitting in a strip club in Prague now.”

U.S. landmarks such as Mount Rushmore, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, the Las Vegas strip and the Empire State Building, and world attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Sydney’s Opera House and Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are just some of the hundreds of sites that will turn off non-essential lighting for the hour.
Here are some lights that Richmond could turn off to participate in this year’s Earth Hour. Thanks to a bunch of Twitter folks for the additional suggestions.
Club Velvet’s completely pointless spotlight. We know where the strippers are.
The new MeadWestvaco building. It doesn’t need to be seen from space.
The spinning marquee outside Movieland with the numerous blinking lights (the one facing Boulevard). People will still know where Movieland is.
The Christmas lights my idiot neighbors still have on their house.
The Sauer’s billboard on Broad St. I think it’s nice too, but I’d be okay with the chef not pouring vanilla extract for an hour.
The lights in Richbrau. They have been on every day. I know for a fact they aren’t open. Or are they reopening…?

Now there is a case – which I put last July before it became fashionable to do so (see my note “Why men are to blame for the crunch”) – that the absence of women from the top of banks and financial companies meant that the atmosphere of board rooms during the bubble years was heavy with testosterone; and the consequence was a culture of dangerous risk-taking in the macho pursuit of short-term profits and bonuses.
You may dispute that. But even if you do, you surely can’t believe that entrepreneurial, wealth creating talents reside exclusively in the Y chromosome. So the dearth of women at the top must surely be depriving the UK of incremental income at a time when we need every penny we can squeeze to pay our way in the world.
But if companies will be forced to produce a report card on their efforts to make their senior management team look a bit more – in a gender sense – like the world rather than a dusty gentlemen’s club, it’s perfectly reasonable to examine Gordon Brown’s record.

Despite all these issues, the Vancouver games will likely have dozens, perhaps hundreds, of viewers. If you’re among those who are new to the winter games, however, I should explain that these Olympics consist primarily of three types of events: traditional cold-weather sports (hockey, skiing, speed skating), activities that most likely originated as drunken fraternity dares (ski jump, luge, naked ice beer pong) and sports that would more accurately be termed “non-sports” (figure skating, ice dancing, curling). And before crazed fans of figure skating and curling begin firing off a lot of angry emails, let me point out that I won’t read them, so don’t bother.
I mean, come on, figure skating a sport? Not as long as the medal winners are chosen by judges who are easier to pay off than a Tijuana strip club doorman. And curling? Sorry, but I refuse to recognize any Olympic event involving brooms as long as the IOC continues to reject demands to accept Quidditch as a medal sport.

More than 1,000 Olympic housing options have been listed since Feb. 1. They range from $25,000 penthouse digs to a $100-per-night stay with a host whose pets’ names reflect their owner’s interest in the Knights of the Round Table.
Some are looking to profit from the Games by appealing to entrepreneurs.
A “mint condition” mini-bus is still on the Craigslist market, as is a “damn near mint condition” hot dog cart. The $28,000 bus is licensed to provide tours and limo service while the $7,500 cart might be a welcome sight for hungry event-goers outside a SkyTrain station.
Other locals are looking to profit by being entrepreneurs themselves.
A recent piece appeared on The Vancouver Sun’s Web site describing the Olympic effect on the city’s adult industry. Needless to say in a country where prostitution is technically legal and a city known for its strip clubs and escort services, Craigslist advertises for plenty of “adult gigs” during the Games.
