BEIJING – Chinese police have arrested a man who hired two strippers to perform at his son’s wedding after the performance was mobbed by villagers, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Zhang Cheng, from Xuzhou in eastern Jiangsu province, had originally wanted a band to play at the nuptials, but was then advised he could get performers whose show would have “special features”, the Global Times said.
“After watching the show, Zhang decided it would be appropriate for his son’s wedding and requested two strippers for the event,” it added. “…Barely five minutes had passed before hundreds of villagers in the conservative community were swarming to the venue, trying to catch a glimpse.”
Zhang was arrested the next day, the newspaper reported, though it did not say on what charge.

The government of China finally confirmed that it has detained the artist Ai Weiwei. Meanwhile, Evan Osnos writes from Beijing for the New Yorker about China’s “Big Chill”:
…
Way back in 1979, David Ramsay Steele, author of From Marx to Mises: Post-Capitalist Society and the Challenge of Economic Calculation, wrote about the changes beginning in China. He quoted authors in the official Beijing Review who were explaining that China would adopt the good aspects of the West–technology, innovation, entrepreneurship–without adopting its liberal values. ”We should do better than the Japanese,” the authors wrote. “They have learnt from the United States not only computer science but also strip-tease. For us it is a matter of acquiring the best of the developed capitalist countries while rejecting their philosophy.” But, Steele replied, countries like China have a choice. “You play the game of catallaxy, or you do not play it. If you do not play it, you remain wretched. But if you play it, you must play it. You want computer science? Then you have to put up with strip-tease.”

With the ratification late last year of the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), the administration hit its lowest point thus far, giving the Russians everything they wanted, while getting nothing in return that Moscow wasn’t happy to discard. Obama got to wave a signed treaty, declaring it a diplomatic triumph. For his part, Russia’s new czar, Vladimir Putin, gained recognition for his two-bit dictatorship as a superpower equal to the US. Instead of measuring our arsenal against the sum of global dangers, No-Nukes Obama reduced it to the size of Russia’s, pretending that China and the growing number of nuclear rogue states don’t exist as additional threats—and even letting Russia keep 1,500 tactical nuclear weapons for which we no longer have equivalents. Obama also gave away dual-use systems that would be essential in a conflict with Beijing. This particular strip-tease was all strip on our side, all tease on Putin’s, a mortifying example of unilateral disarmament by a president who still despises the military. Mere days after the Senate foolishly ratified this treaty and Obama signed it, Putin—howling with delight—mooned Obama by imposing a fresh prison term on political prisoner Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Some re-set.

I was living in Beijing during the U.S. release of the seventh and final Harry Potter novel, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” in the summer of 2007. At the time, I remember there being a shared feeling of lament among the American expat community, some of whom had been living there for years.
…
Apparently, some Chinese author thought J.K. Rowling was too slow of a writer. Releasing 12 volumes over three years, the series is just loosely based on the actual characters and plot. With a relatively absurd integration of Chinese culture and morals with over-the-top western stereotypes, J.R.R Tolkien’s wizard Gandalf is one of the main characters of the first novel, and Voldemort is occasionally referred to as Yandomort. Dudley is dating a stripper, and the series more or less revolves around a group of Chinese exchange student-wizards who were invited to Hogwarts. The series, which presumedly makes more sense in Chinese, has become wildly popular among its young audiences.
Returning home from Beijing, I thought about all the things that get lost in translation, and I thought about how they also get found — even things like Harry Potter.

A present-day token of affection came from artists Tara Donovan and Robbie Crawford, who presented the Glimchers with a Lego replica of Beijing Pace. The Lego people out front are Glimcher look-alikes.
After peking duck but before the fortune cookie and ice cream bar opened, the Glimchers took the stage to perform. Mrs. Glimcher said it was her first time singing karaoke. The tunes: Captain & Tennille’s “Love will keep us together” and “Do it to me one more time.” Mr. Glimcher played the keyboard. (Honoree performances are a nascent Creative Time tradition: last year, Ray Learsy and Melva Bucksbaum performed a number from “Guys and Dolls,” and the year prior, honoree Beth Rudin DeWoody was serenaded with the help of male strippers.) The event drew 400 people and raised about $1 million for the organization.

OLYMPICS: END OF AN ERA WITH DEATH OF JUAN ANTONIO SAMARANCH
Thursday April 22,2010
THE death of Juan Antonio Samaranch, the seventh president of the International Olympic Committee, aged 89, yesterday brought to a close the most revolutionary period in the history of the Olympic movement.
Elected in 1980, Spaniard Samaranch, seized a near-bankrupt organisation and, within the first 10 years of a reign that lasted 21, transformed both the IOC and the Games beyond recognition. Not everyone approved.
Yet he transformed an old-fashioned, amateur gentlemans club to a condition of frontline professionalism, both within the executive and in the medal-winning arena.
Those 10 years were the first of two revolutions; primarily, the formal acceptance in 1987, against a background of 70 years resistance, of a world that embraced top sponsors.

U.S. landmarks such as Mount Rushmore, St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, the Las Vegas strip and the Empire State Building, and world attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Sydney’s Opera House and Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are just some of the hundreds of sites that will turn off non-essential lighting for the hour.
Here are some lights that Richmond could turn off to participate in this year’s Earth Hour. Thanks to a bunch of Twitter folks for the additional suggestions.
Club Velvet’s completely pointless spotlight. We know where the strippers are.
The new MeadWestvaco building. It doesn’t need to be seen from space.
The spinning marquee outside Movieland with the numerous blinking lights (the one facing Boulevard). People will still know where Movieland is.
The Christmas lights my idiot neighbors still have on their house.
The Sauer’s billboard on Broad St. I think it’s nice too, but I’d be okay with the chef not pouring vanilla extract for an hour.
The lights in Richbrau. They have been on every day. I know for a fact they aren’t open. Or are they reopening…?

Now there is a case – which I put last July before it became fashionable to do so (see my note “Why men are to blame for the crunch”) – that the absence of women from the top of banks and financial companies meant that the atmosphere of board rooms during the bubble years was heavy with testosterone; and the consequence was a culture of dangerous risk-taking in the macho pursuit of short-term profits and bonuses.
You may dispute that. But even if you do, you surely can’t believe that entrepreneurial, wealth creating talents reside exclusively in the Y chromosome. So the dearth of women at the top must surely be depriving the UK of incremental income at a time when we need every penny we can squeeze to pay our way in the world.
But if companies will be forced to produce a report card on their efforts to make their senior management team look a bit more – in a gender sense – like the world rather than a dusty gentlemen’s club, it’s perfectly reasonable to examine Gordon Brown’s record.
