The Fujian opera “Degraded Official” and Mountain Song Opera “Peach Blossom Rain” were performed recently in Beijing. Though different in style, the two dramas entertained Beijing audiences with their strong local flavor.
“Degraded Official” performed by the Experimental Theater for Fujian opera entertained with its comedic story line and unique local flavor.
An official is degraded in rank for marrying a prostitute. But he shows his righteousness and wisdom in judging a criminal case, which wins heart of his fellowmen and the governor who gives him back his original rank.
The lead role was originally played by a straight man in the 1990s when the play was created, but the troupe made a change from 2003, casting a clown role to play the lead. The funny postures of the clown role and exaggerated facial expressions make the performance more intriguing.
