Beijing Adult Entertainment: Drugs, Rain, Apathy: Pivotal Games
First, Dwight Freeney at the Super Bowl, now LIndsey Vonn at the Olympics. What is sport without an injury soap opera? “She had a smile today,” Thomas Vonn said. “It’s very encouraging. It seems like kind of we’re turning a corner.”
Stars will emerge. And stories will emerge, hopefully more triumphant than tragic. The Canadian government has spent more than $600 million on security but won’t have to worry about protecting President Obama, who isn’t attending the Games, probably because he’s too busy preparing for March Madness and his NCAA tournament brackets. This will be the fifth Olympics since 9/11, and so far, there have been few security incidents in Salt Lake City, Athens, Turin and Beijing. Vancouver would seem as pleasant and safe as any, with visitors charmed by the trees of Stanley Park, international cuisine, hopping nightclubs and lovely neighborhoods. But be careful nonetheless, especially when venturing into a drugs-and-prostitution area called Downtown Eastside that isn’t far from Olympic venues.
